Master Bath Remodel #2-the story

Way back in 2013, the hubby and I decided to do a bath remodel. We didn’t have a lot of funds and knew we could do most of the work ourselves so that is what we did. We were replacing the original tile in our 1980s house. It was in okay condition, but sorely in need of an update.

This was the result and we loved it. To save some money, we decided not to replace the tub. It was old, but in almost perfect condition with no scratches. At least it had no scratches until we began tiling. We had hoped it would be the last bath remodel we did for a long time.

Silly us, thinking we were so professional and not using anything to cover the tub area. Found out pretty quick that dropping a few tiles scratches right through that porcelain surface near the drain.

We finished the job thinking we would touch up the small scratches and move on. Well, life got in the way and the touch up never happened. At least not in time. It wasn’t long before the tub began to rust right around the drain area. We did try a few times to repair it with a porcelain repair kit, but it was too late and the damage was done. Hindsight is 20/20. While taking a bath one day I pushed down on the drain to open it and the tub finally broke through.

Ouch. A big mess to clean up and a huge expense we didn’t need just after putting new siding on.

We had talked previously about putting in a standing shower should we ever remodel again so that is what we decided to do. And we knew we were out of our league on this one, so we called in a professional. He listened to what I wanted and began the demo. The following pics are all of the process, the finished bathroom can be seen here.
